The purpose of our investigation is to design and test a bench scale catalytic
plug flow packed bed reactor, in order to study the feasibility of converting methanol to
gasoline. The model consists mainly of a fixed bed tubular reactor with electric heating
jacket and a shell and tube condenser. The reactor is operated in a continuous mode.
Reactor temperature and space time are varied to determine their influence in the product
yield and composition. Reactor space time is defined as the ratio of catalyst volume and
methanol feed volumetric flow rate. Gas chromatography and mass spectroscopy are used to
analyze the composition of products. The final product should be a mixture of paraffins
and aromatics which closely resembles petroleum gasoline.
